Dr. Saul M. Pressner

I love meeting people and developing new long-term relationships

I have been in practice since 1981 and am highly trained in all phases of dentistry. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and have my certificate in Family Dentistry from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. I am a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and take many continuing education courses.

I am very empathetic and skilled in treating patients who are either very anxious, fearful and/ or nervous about receiving dental care. Our staff includes several dental hygienists, one of whom has a masters in psychology. Our receptionists and dental assistants are very concerned with helping patients who are fearful of dental treatment.

I am an Alleman-Deliperi institute certified Biomimetric Dentistry instructor. In addition, I will be pleased to be sworn in again as President of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry. I have been honored to give many lectures on Biomimetric Dentistry; several at Penn Dental Medicine, my alma mater, one at Tel Aviv School of Dental Medicine, and others at Columbia University School of Dentistry and various study clubs. Additionally, I have written several articles for the Keystone Explorer and an article for Dental Economics on the subject of Biomemetic Dentistry.

Articles: Spring 2013 and Summer 2013. Summer 2015 .

Patient Forms

Dental bridges replace missing teeth and teeth that are too badly damaged for crowns or fillings. They help hold remaining teeth in proper alignment and keep natural teeth from bearing too much stress from biting and chewing. This is one of the most common dental procedures for filling a gap in a patient’s smile.

Dental crowns are long-lasting and durable tooth prosthetics. Indianapolis dental crown specialists Dr. Ben Ahlbrecht ensure that their patients are happy and comfortable with their crowns. Modern porcelain crowns are beautiful, life-like, blend in with the other teeth and are nearly indestructible. Unlike cosmetic dental treatments, crowns are usually included in dental plan coverage. This makes them a budget-friendly option for tooth restoration.

Dentures provide patients with extensive tooth loss restored dental function and a normal looking smile. Today’s technology and materials makes dentures more comfortable and realistic than ever. For example, implant-supported prosthetics are held firmly in place with no slipping or shifting.

Gone are the days when you have to be embarrassed by the ugly silver/black fillings in your teeth! Modern technology has allowed us to place natural, strong, long-lasting tooth-colored fillings that restore your tooth to it’s original beauty. Not only are tooth-colored fillings more attractive, but are mercury-free, and are much better for your teeth. Read More

Dental implants have been used successfully for smile restoration for the last 50 years. This is the most conservative and longest-lasting treatment for replacing a missing tooth. Implants are also useful for supporting dentures and bridges to correct more extensive tooth loss.

Porcelain veneers offer patients an opportunity to enjoy their ideal smile. Porcelain veneers are custom fabricated to match each patient’s aesthetic preferences. They are bonded in place with strong dental cement for a long-lasting smile makeover. Read More…Whitening
Teeth whitening is a very effective and non-invasive way to roll back the years. Whiter teeth make your smile look more youthful, healthy, and attractive. Treatment is simple and can be done in the dentist’s office or at home.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry covers the health of children’s teeth from infancy through adolescence. Common treatments include cleanings, dental sealant and restoration of damaged or decayed teeth. Kids who receive good dental care throughout childhood have a better chance of enjoying a straight, white and healthy smile as adults.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry covers a very wide variety of procedures. Some of the most common are tooth whitening, composite dental bonding and porcelain veneers. You can pick and choose which treatments will give you the ideal smile.

Family Dentistry

Family dentistry offers patients the chance to get most of their dental care needs met in one location. This approach makes scheduling oral care easier and increases the chances of catching dental problems early. That’s an important factor in getting the most cost-effective treatment over time.

Invisalign® braces have only been on the market since 1998. However, they are rapidly becoming the treatment of choice for teens and adults who want a straighter smile without the discomfort and unpleasant appearance of traditional braces. These clear plastic aligner trays can be used for mild to moderate orthodontic correction.

Simple toothaches can often be relieved by rinsing the mouth to clear it of debris and other matter. Sometimes, a toothache can be caused or aggravated by a piece of debris lodged between the tooth and another tooth. Avoid placing an aspirin between your tooth and gum to relieve pain, because the dissolving aspirin can actually harm your gum tissue.

Dental Emergencies

While dental emergencies are upsetting, most can be simply handled by you at home until you can get an appointment to see your dentist. If you are in the Indianapolis area and are having dental problems, emergency dentist Dr. Pressner has suggested you take the following actions:

Dental Insurance

We do not accept or participate in any dental insurance plans. However, we do assist patients in filling out their insurance paperwork in order to pay for our office for services rendered.

Biomimetic Dentistry

Biomimetic dentistry is a tooth-conserving method of dentistry that aims to treat decayed, weak and fractured teeth. This powerful treatment has nearly eliminated the need for cutting teeth down for crowns and performing painful and destructive root canals. Unlike many conventional treatments, which can be both costly and invasive, biomimetic dental treatments often cost less and prevent future issues.

Traditional dentistry resorts to destroying natural teeth to accommodate synthetic restorations. Biomimetic professionals, on the other hand, attempt to mimic the natural principles of teeth and preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible.

With the use of modern adhesives and bonding techniques, practitioners of biomimetic dentistry are able to rebuild teeth with materials that more closely resemble natural teeth. Patients who have undergone these restorations significantly reduce their potential need for root canals, destructive crowns, and bacterial invasion. Now patients can receive tooth conserving dental therapy which can often lead to better long term prognoses for these teeth.

Here is an article written by Dr. Pressner about the biomimetic approach.

Family Dentistry

Family dentistry offers patients the chance to get most of their dental care needs met in one location. If you are in the New York City area, we make scheduling oral care easier and help increase the chances of catching dental problems early. That’s an important factor in getting the most cost-effective treatment over time.

Family dentistry offers comprehensive diagnosis, preventive care and treatment of common dental problems for patients of all ages. Since it’s never too early or too late to start taking better care of your teeth, picking a dentist who can take care of your whole family is always a smart choice. Remember that good dental hygiene practices are learned at home and at the dentist’s office. It’s very beneficial to have a professional in your corner to provide advice on the most effective ways to promote oral health at every stage of life.

What Does Family Dentistry Involve?

Some of the most common services, treatments and procedures that Dr. Pressner performs as a family dentist includes:

Oral Health Examination

This involves a visual examination of the teeth, gums and jaw to check for signs of decay, disease, bite misalignment, crooked or poorly spaced teeth and other abnormalities. X-rays, TMJ and oral cancer screenings fall into this category.

Prophylactic Cleaning

This is a basic preventive treatment that includes removing minor plaque and tartar buildup to reduce the risk of gingivitis and cavities. It leaves teeth feeling fresh and clean. Getting a preventive cleaning every six months is ideal for most children and adults.

Gum Disease Intervention

Treatments for moderate gingivitis and early stages of periodontitis involve scaling teeth. This just means scraping off tartar below the gum line where it builds up and causes gum irritation. It may also involve root planning (smoothing the tooth root so bacteria and plaque can’t build up as easily).

Fluoride Treatment & Dental Sealant

These preventive treatments are usually recommended for children to limit tooth decay. However, adults can also request these procedures. Fluoride gel is applied topically a couple of times per year. Dental sealant is brushed onto the chewing surfaces of molars where tiny grooves in the enamel can’t be adequately cleaned by toothbrush bristles. Sealant generally lasts several years.

Root Canals

An infection in the pulp of a tooth is the most common cause of toothache. Family dentistry includes root canal procedures to relieve pain and stop the spread of bacterial infection. This treatment involves removing infected tooth pulp and restoring the tooth with a filling or crown. A less extensive treatment called a pulpotomy is used for baby teeth.

Simple Extractions

Extractions range from pulling baby molars that have splintered to removing decayed or damaged adult teeth. A family dentist can also perform simple wisdom tooth extractions. This procedure is easiest to do before children reach their late teens.

Fillings & Crowns

These basic tooth restoration procedures are designed to fill in areas of tooth decay or damage. You can get metal amalgam and composite fillings as well as metal and ceramic crowns from a family dentist. Fillings are appropriate for patients of all ages. Ceramic crowns are most often recommended to restore adult teeth. A baby tooth can be treated with a less expensive but very durable stainless steel crown to restore function until the tooth comes out naturally.

Tooth Whitening

This cosmetic procedure is intended for adult patients with a buildup of staining on their teeth from food and beverage consumption, smoking and other lifestyle habits. Discoloration in children’s teeth is sometimes caused by issues that surface whitening doesn’t address. So, kids may need different cosmetic treatment than adults to achieve whiter teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry covers a very wide variety of procedures. Some of the most common are tooth whitening, composite dental bonding and porcelain veneers. You can pick and choose which treatments will give you the ideal smile.

Cosmetic dentistry is designed to provide patients with teeth that are evenly spaced, attractively shaped, white and healthy. Treatment typically focuses on tooth flaws that show when you talk, smile, eat or laugh. Procedures can involve just one tooth or all visible teeth.

Why Choose Cosmetic Dentistry?

Psychologists tell us that your smile and your eyes are the first two features people notice when they meet you. Some people naturally have great looking teeth, but most of us need a little help to get a smile that makes us look our best. It’s not unusual for patients with flawed teeth to feel embarrassed or self-conscious about their smile. Cosmetic dentistry is designed to help you feel more confident about your appearance. Most treatments are minimally invasive and not too time-consuming.

Some of the Problems Dr. Pressner Can Correct:

  • Chips and fractures along the edges of the teeth
  • Surface cracks that make the enamel look broken
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Stained enamel or dark dentin (the layer underneath the enamel)
  • Teeth that look too short or stubby
  • Teeth that are irregularly shaped
  • Metal amalgam fillings that show when you smile
  • Gum tissue that is uneven or that covers up too much of your teeth
  • Missing teeth (cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry overlap)

Who is a Candidate for Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dental treatment works best for patients who have good oral health. The goal of treatment is primarily to improve the appearance of teeth and gums that are already functioning well with little or no decay, disease or damage. Some cosmetic dentistry procedures are not suitable for patients who have extensive dental prosthetics. For example, tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. If you have a porcelain crown on a front tooth and whiten the rest of your teeth, your crown may no longer match the color of the surrounding enamel.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Overview

Dr. Pressner offers many treatments to address a range of dental flaws. Here are some of the most common procedures for making teeth look more attractive:

Tooth Whitening

Professional tooth whitening can make teeth six-to-10 shades lighter for a dramatically younger, brighter smile. At-home treatment uses a custom-molded plastic tray and a concentrated peroxide gel. In-office “laser” whitening treatment activates the peroxide gel with a special lamp to make the treatment work faster.

Dental Veneers

Porcelain veneers cover up a wide variety of tooth imperfections. They can be used to close gaps and conceal crooked, misshapen, discolored, or chipped teeth. Veneers are cemented in place for long-lasting smile improvement.

Invisalign® Braces

These clear plastic aligner trays gently move teeth into better alignment over a period of several months. Unlike metal braces, they are practically invisible. Plus, you can remove them during meals and tooth brushing/flossing. Cosmetic dentists often use Invisalign® to give patients a more even, symmetrical smile with no unsightly gaps or crowded teeth.

Cosmetic Bonding

Tooth-colored resin is a popular option for same-day correction of teeth that are chipped or misshapen. Dental composite can also be used for filling small cavities in front teeth.

Gum Recontouring

This treatment is designed for patients who have an uneven gumline or a “gummy” smile. Removing excess gum tissue can restore attractive proportions to teeth that look stubby.

Dental Restorations

Patients who have cosmetic and structural problems with their teeth may need treatment that is both aesthetic and restorative. This might include porcelain inlays/onlays, crowns or dental implants.

More Information about Cosmetic Dentistry

As you plan your treatment, you should know that the majority of cosmetic procedures are not covered by dental insurance. However, you should be able to set up an affordable payment plan that lets you start enjoying a brighter smile right away. Most cosmetic dentistry treatments require some maintenance over the years. You should plan ahead for the long term costs of keeping your smile in mint condition. You may be able to significantly prolong the lifespan of your cosmetic restorations by practicing good dental hygiene. Regular dental exams and cleanings are critical to protect your cosmetic investment.

Tooth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a very effective and non-invasive way to roll back the years. Whiter teeth make your smile look more youthful, healthy, and attractive. Treatment is simple and can be done in the dentist’s office or at home.

Teeth whitening at our New York office is an affordable and simple procedure for creating a brighter and more vibrant smile. It’s no surprise that this is currently the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry procedure in the U.S., and Dr. Pressner has established himself as a teeth whitening expert to help his patients in the New York area get the smile of their dreams.

Why Choose Teeth Whitening?

As you age, it’s normal for your tooth enamel to accumulate stains. You may not even notice it happening at first, but the effects become obvious over time. This discoloration tends to occur more rapidly for patients who regularly consume products like:

Coffee or tea
Red wine
Dark colored fruit juices and sodas
Cigarettes or smokeless tobacco

Yellow and brown stains can make your teeth appear dirty – even when you brush and floss faithfully. Most “whitening toothpastes” contain no real whitening agent. They simply remove surface stain – the same stain that is removed by a dental cleaning. Most of tooth darkening comes from inside the teeth, and the only way to significantly change the color of your teeth is by using a “bleaching” agent that penetrates under the surface. This teeth whitening procedure will give you the confidence of a dazzling smile that Dr. Pressner is determined to provide to his patients.

Teeth Whitening Procedure Overview

Both professional whitening procedures, in office and at home, use the same whitening agent – usually some form of concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel. The peroxide penetrates the tooth enamel, and oxidizes as it breaks down, whitening the teeth.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

Patients who want brilliant white teeth in a very short time often choose in-office teeth whitening at our New York location for same day results. The procedure takes about an hour. During this time, you can simply sit back and relax. This treatment uses a special laser lamp to speed up the activity of peroxide gel and make it much more effective. Many patients see a six-to-eight shade improvement after this procedure. Your gums and lips are protected from the gel during treatment to reduce discomfort and irritation. This smile whitening treatment is a great option if you have a special event coming up, or don’t want to wait weeks for your teeth to whiten.

New York dentist Dr. Pressner specializes in performing in-office teeth whitening.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

This whitening procedure works well as a follow-up to keep your teeth at their whitest after in-office treatment. You receive a custom fitted mold of your teeth and a supply of professional-strength peroxide gel. Simply coat the upper and lower trays with gel each day and wear them for the recommended period of time. These convenient at-home whitening regimens usually take a few weeks to show maximum results. You can repeat the treatment as needed to maintain or improve your teeth whitening over time. Custom trays are comfortable to wear and ensure that the gel actually stays in contact with your enamel during treatment.

More Information about Teeth Whitening

Smile whitening is designed for adults with good oral hygiene who want a more youthful looking smile. It works best for patients who have stained enamel, as opposed to discoloration from worn enamel that is allowing the darker dentin layer beneath to show through. It will not whiten porcelain or resin tooth restorations. So, this procedure may not be suitable for patients who have visible veneers, crowns or tooth colored fillings in their front teeth. Some patients tend to experience tooth sensitivity for a while after tooth whitening. This is usually mild and resolves soon after treatment. If you have experienced tooth sensitivity after a smile whitening procedure in the past, be sure to ask us about ways to reduce this side effect.

Thanks again for everything.
The excellent dental work, kindness, customer service, and great people in your office have made me a satisfied customer! I can't wait for my next appointment.

Implant Dentistry

The gold standard for smile makeovers and dental restoration

Dental implants have been used successfully for smile restoration for the last 50 years. This is the most conservative and longest-lasting treatment for replacing a missing tooth. Implants are also useful for supporting dentures and bridges to correct more extensive tooth loss.

Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for missing or severely damaged teeth. Dental implants in our New York office deliver an unprecedented level of patient satisfaction. Tooth implants provide a natural-looking appearance and long-lasting function. They are the gold standard for smile makeovers and dental restoration. If you are in the New York area and have lost one or more teeth to fractures, gum disease or tooth decay, dental implant specialist Dr. Pressner can help you get back your beautiful smile.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

  • Implants can be used to fully restore teeth that are too badly damaged or decayed for repair with a porcelain inlay/onlay or a crown.
  • A dental implant restores normal chewing and biting ability. Most patients can resume a normal, healthy diet that includes a wide variety of foods after treatment is complete.
  • Tooth implants offer a conservative solution compared to a traditional bridge. Only the tooth that is being replaced is affected. The teeth on either side of the missing tooth do not need to be crowned to hold a conventional bridge.
  • Patients can opt to have one or several teeth replaced with implants. Dental implants can also support dentures. These implant-supported dentures are more stable and comfortable than those held in place with adhesive.
  • Replacing a missing tooth with an implant helps prevent other teeth from shifting out of alignment over time. Keeping teeth straight and even promotes better oral care. It makes proper brushing and flossing easier, which reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease.
  • Since the prosthetic tooth is load-bearing (you can bite and chew with it), an implant may also help limit further jaw bone loss in the treated area.
  • Long term success rates with implants range from 90-95%. Most patients enjoy their dental implants for life with no need for replacement or repair.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants??

If you have lost, or are congenitally missing one or more teeth, we recommend speaking with Dr. Pressner about getting the dental implants from our New York office. There is no upper age limit for this treatment. The most important factor in success rates for implants is bone density. Patients who have very advanced periodontitis (gum disease) may not have enough bone left to hold an implant. They may need one or more bone grafting procedures before they can get tooth implants. Smokers have more complications during healing than non-smokers, so if you smoke, you need to stop before you undergo this dental treatment.

Dental Implants Procedure Overview

Tooth implants rely on osseointegration to create a stable connection between a titanium implant and the jawbone. During osseointegration, the bone grows into direct contact with the implant, holding it firmly in place. Here’s a brief overview of the treatment process provided by New York dental implant specialist, Dr. Presnner:

  1. Consultation – This includes a full oral exam, medical history, x-rays and a CT scan. This information is used to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants as well as what size and shape of implant to use.
  2. Preparation – If you have a tooth root in place, this is removed. The gum is opened slightly to expose the jawbone.
  3. Placement – A tiny hole is drilled in your jawbone and the titanium implant is screwed or fitted in place.
  4. Healing – This phase lasts 3-6 months. During this time, your jawbone heals around the implant.
  5. Abutment – A small metal post is attached to the implant and your gum is allowed to heal again (this recovery period is much shorter).
  6. Restoration – A custom fabricated porcelain crown that looks like your natural teeth is fitted to the abutment.

This dental treatment generally has a higher up-front cost than traditional crowns and bridges. The restoration process also takes much longer. However, the investment in time and money can more than pay for itself with a reduction in dental interventions over your lifetime. Just be sure to practice excellent dental hygiene so you don’t lose more teeth!

Temporomandibular Disorder

The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the skull. Pain in this area is characterized as Temporomandibular Disorder. This joint is similar to many others in the body, and as such, is susceptible to conditions like ankylosis, arthritis, and dislocations.

TMD Symptoms Include

Biting/chewing difficulty or discomfort
Neck and shoulder pain
Hearing loss
Headaches/earaches in the morning
Jaw pain or tenderness
Reduced ability to open/close the mouth

Should you notice any of these symptoms, please contact our office. Our specialists can diagnose and provide you with treatment options.

Emergency Care

If you are in the New York area and are having a dental emergency, please call Dr. Pressner at 212.249.8999.

Most toothaches can be managed until you can get in to see you dentist with over-the-counter pain relievers. Ibuprofen (800mg every four to six hours) usually works best, for adults who are not allergic to it. Children should take Tylenol. If that doesn’t control your pain, or if you have swelling, call your dentist.

Fractured Tooth

If the tooth isn’t painful, avoid chewing on that side, and call the office when it is open. If it has a sharp edge that is irritating your cheeks or tongue, you can get some soft “toothache wax” at the drugstore and cover sharp area.

Tooth Knocked Out

Call your dentist immediately, since the tooth must be replaced as soon as possible. You can try to put it back into the tooth socket yourself if necessary. Try NOT to touch the root of the tooth, holding it by the crown, and push it into the socket. If you your dentist is going to put it back in, put the tooth in saline solution, milk, or the patient’s saliva and take it with you to the office. Remember, after two hours the success of re-implanting tooth goes down drastically.

Teeth Knocked Out of Position

Again, call your dentist immediately. If you can’t get into your dentist soon, try to “pop” them back into position yourself, and call your dentist soon as

The mouth is very vascular, so even minor lacerations can bleed profusely. Apply pressure to the area with a clean cloth. If you can’t get the bleeding stopped after 20-30 minutes, call your dentist, or go to the hospital Emergency Room.
